Travel Advice and Information

More information coming soon!

For now, find information on flying in and out of Ireland, public transportation and car share, what to wear, accommodation, and day tours and tourist destinations in Limerick.

Flying In and Out of Ireland

Shannon Airport (SNN) is the closest airport and has more flights during the summer months than the winter months. There are buses and taxis (~€40) to Limerick city from Shannon.

Bus from Shannon Airport to Limerick City. (You’ll have to take a different bus to get to UL)

Alternatively, you can find more routes, sometimes cheaper, in and out of Dublin Airport (DUB), but then you will have to travel by bus to Limerick City. Depending on the bus, the rate is around €20 and can go to UL or just the city centre. These buses are here:

Dublin Coach: Route 726: N7 service, changing bus at the Red Cow LUAS stop to the Route 300: M7 service

Eireagle: Faster, fewer stops, not bus changes, but runs less frequently

There are no trains from Dublin Airport to Limerick, but there is one from Dublin City Centre to Limerick City Centre. Buses are cheaper and faster, though.

Public Transportation and Car Share

Events will be held at the University of Limerick and Technological University of the Shannon: Midlands Midwest (formerly Limerick Institute of Technology). There are a number of services between UL and the city centre, and one route from the city centreu to TUS. Limerick buses are very, very unreliable, so we recommend hiring a car.

The routes between UL and the City Centre are Bus Eireann route 304, or Dublin Coach 307 and 308 routes

The routes between TUS (formerly LIT) and the City Centre are Bus Eireann route 302.

If you would like to share a car with someone else to reduce costs, email Kerry.Hagan@ul.ie with subject ICMC Car Share. We will make a Google spreadsheet with your name and email, travel dates, and driving licence, and when the conference nears, we will share it so that all can reach each other.

What to Wear

Weather in Ireland is unpredictable. It tends to be mild, so don’t expect to have extremes of temperature, but most people will find summer in Ireland to be rather chilly. Bring lots of layers you can add or remove depending on the temperatures, especially water resistant layers. Umbrellas work when the rain isn’t coming sideways, which happens less frequently in summer. An Australian once said that summer in Ireland is like winter in Perth.

Accommodation

There will be on-campus accommodation (en-suite bedrooms), which will be available for booking when you register here: https://ulevents.eventsair.com/2022-icmc/icmc2022reg
